Norco, CA, October 16, 2025 - Calling all designers, architects, engineers, and creative thinkers of all kinds: We need you and your innovative ideas for QCP’s new Ecological Design Challenge. This marks our first official design competition, and we’re asking students and professionals alike to participate.

For nearly 50 years, QCP has been a leader in precast concrete site furniture. But these days, we’re asking bigger questions: Can site elements do more than provide comfort and utility? Can they actively contribute to climate resilience? Can precast concrete, a material known for its strength and adaptability, become a medium for ecological innovation?

With these looming questions in mind, we invite participants to design a piece of furniture, an object, or a device that pushes the limits of conventional site furnishings. Your design should not just serve people; it should also contribute to environmental solutions. This challenge is intended to challenge traditional boundaries and explore new intersections between design, ecology, and material innovation.

Below, see the formal requirements for the challenge:

Design a piece of site furniture, an object, or a device that:

  • Is made primarily from precast concrete (regular or lightweight)
  • Fits within the minimum and maximum size parameters (12 x 12 x 12 inches to 90 x 90 x 36 inches)
  • Provides an implementable and realistic solution to an ecological challenge

A panel of experts will ultimately choose 1st and 2nd place prize winners for both categories. Four cash prizes will be awarded, along with a prototype for each 1st place prize winner. These include:

  • 1st Place Prize for Professional Submissions: $3,000 and prototype
  • 2nd Place Prize for Professional Submissions: $1,500
  • 1st Place Prize for Student Submissions: $1,500 and prototype
  • 2nd Place Prize for Student Submissions: $500

Ready to push the limits of traditional site furnishing? Here are the deadlines to mark on your calendar:

  • December 30, 2025: Submit questions about the challenge
  • January 15, 2026: Last day to register
  • February 28, 2026: Submittals due
